    View original ↗

Author Neil Phelps shares stories of the historic Licking County Jail. The Jail served Licking County for nearly a century, from 1889 to 1987. During that time, it housed many criminals including serial killers, thieves, and some of the most heinous murderers Licking County ever experienced. Suicides, jail escapes, sheriffs who died while serving in office, and a lynching are discussed. The history and construction of the jail will also be considered. Neil Phelps became interested in researching the history of the old Licking County jail in 2010 when he was a volunteer at the Licking County Records and Archives Department, helping clean and restore old jail registers form the 1800s. During this time, he became interested in writing his book about the history of the jail, including stories about many of the inmates who served time there. His research revealed many vicious crimes that were committed right here in Licking County, as well as jail escapes and suicides during the 98 years this jail was in operation. He also helped prepare the jail for public tours and served as a tour guide for several years.

New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist Keith O'Brien discusses his 2025 book, Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball. Charlie Hustle was a NY Times best seller and a New Yorker Best Book of the Year winner of the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for biography. A book signing takes place from 6 - 6:45pm. Mr. O'Brien's presentation begins at 7pm. You may reserve up to 2 free tickets through Weathervane Playhouse's box office at Events for Weathervane Playhouse . Tickets are required for entry. Copies of Charlie Hustle book can be pre-ordered for pick-up at the event from Kicks Mix Bookstore . Additionally, copies of Keith's newest 2026 book, Heartland , can also be pre-ordered. Pete Rose is a legend. He compiled more hits than anyone in the history of baseball, a record he set decades ago that still stands today. He was a working-class white guy from Cincinnati who made it; less talented than tough, and rough around the edges. He was everything that America wanted and needed him to be, the American dream personified, until he wasn’t. In the 1980s, Pete Rose came to be at the center of one of the biggest scandals in baseball history. He kept secrets, ran with bookies, took on massive gambling debts, and he was cast out for betting on baseball and lying about it. Charlie Hustle tells the full story of one of America’s most epic tragedies—the rise and fall of Pete Rose. Drawing on firsthand interviews with Rose himself and with his associates, as well as on investigators' reports, FBI and court records, archives, a mountain of press coverage, Keith O’Brien chronicles how Rose fell so far from being America’s “great white hope.” It is Pete Rose as we've never seen him before. Keith has written four books, been a finalist for the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting, been longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and has contributed to multiple publications over the years. His newest book, Heartland: A Forgotten Place, an Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird, was released March 2026. Keith's work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, and on National Public Radio. His radio stories have aired on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition, as well as Marketplace and This American Life. A Midwesterner by birth, O'Brien grew up in Cincinnati and graduated from Northwestern University. He now lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, two dogs and two cats.

  • 🎨 Leonid and Friends

Time TBD · The Midland Theatre

    Arts Music
    View original ↗

They never saw Chicago perform live. They had no sheet music. Working entirely by ear from recordings and videos, Leonid Vorobyev and his circle of elite musicians reconstructed one of the most complex catalogs in American rock — and did it so perfectly that Chicago themselves took notice. That's the origin story of Leonid & Friends, the globally acclaimed 11-piece collective that has taken the music world by storm — and is coming to the Midland Theatre in Newark, Ohio. Formed by multi-talented musician and producer Leonid Vorobyev, the group draws elite vocalists and instrumentalists from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, and beyond, united by a shared obsession with celebrating the golden era of American horn-driven rock. What began as a retirement gift to himself — a single studio cover of a Chicago song — quickly went viral. Chicago's own members praised the recordings and shared them on their official website. Chicago's original drummer Danny Seraphine was so moved, he joined the band on stage during one of their U.S. shows. Wikipedia The internet went wild, and the world followed. Today, Leonid & Friends have blown the minds of legions of fans with their uncanny ability to capture the spirit, musicality, and fire of American supergroup Chicago — racking up over 200 million video views and more than 200 successful U.S. shows. Arcada Theatre With 500 million combined views across platforms, multiple sold-out coast-to-coast tours, and fans who travel show to show just to hear them again, this is not your average tribute act. In concert, Leonid & Friends deliver a stunningly authentic and exhilarating experience: a razor-tight horn section, rich vocal harmonies, and unmistakable rock & roll soul that fills every corner of the room. Expect timeless anthems like "25 or 6 to 4," "Make Me Smile," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," "Beginnings," "Questions 67 & 68," and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry / Get Away" — alongside select surprises from an ever-expanding repertoire that includes Earth, Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Steely Dan, The Carpenters, and other beloved '70s favorites. Ohio has always known great music. This is one night you don't want to miss. MEET AND GREET ADD ON: A wonderful opportunity for fans to meet and interact with Leonid & Friends. Quantity is limited at each show. Shortly after the concert, attendees will be allowed to meet the band, have a group photo taken, and the opportunity to chat with band members and have merchandise or memorabilia signed. Must have a show ticket to participate in the Meet and Greet.

    Education
    View original ↗

John E. Hancock talks about his book, Traveler's Guide to Ancient Ohio: Featuring the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks . This compact, richly illustrated travel guide takes visitors to the many Indigenous earthwork wonders of southern Ohio, including the brilliant landscape monuments recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The author recounts the 30-year story of how this project came about—the vision for a curated, regional approach to Ohio’s brilliant American Indian earthworks—and describes how this book showcases southern Ohio’s rich and surprising layers of cultural heritage for both armchair and on-site travelers. A Q&A session and a book signing take place after the lecture. Copies of his book are available for purchase during the event. About the Author: John E. Hancock (M. Arch. McGill University) taught architectural history and design at the University of Cincinnati for four decades. His expertise in environmental meaning and experience has informed his leadership of both actual and virtual cultural heritage tours in Ohio and across Europe. Working with interdisciplinary teams and Native advisors since the 1990s, he has created many public education media projects about Ohio’s Indigenous earthworks, including The Ancient Ohio Trail website (2014). Most recently, John served as the principal author and photographer for the successful Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage nomination (2023), in collaboration with the Ohio History Connection and National Park Service. He has now re-edited and expanded that work for release from Smithsonian Books (2026).

  • 🎵 That Arena Rock Show

Time TBD · The Midland Theatre

    View original ↗

Some nights, you don’t want a concert. You want a time machine. That Arena Rock Show is the ultimate high-energy theatrical tribute to the era when rock was king, the hair was tall, and every guitar solo was a full body experience. This isn’t a cover band tucked in the corner of a bar. This is the full arena spectacle scaled to a historic stage, with the costumes, the swagger, and the note-for-note precision that has earned them a “100% recommend” reputation venue after venue. For one night, The Midland becomes the arena you always wished you’d been at. You’ll hear the anthems that ruled the airwaves from Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, and the rest of the classic rock hall of fame. You’ll sing every word. You’ll air-guitar without shame. You may even hold up a lighter, or the modern equivalent, and no one will judge you. Bring the crew that still knows every lyric. Bring the kids who need to understand what a real guitar solo sounds like. Bring anyone who has ever cranked “Livin’ on a Prayer” in the car and hit the high note anyway. This one belongs to all of them.
