  Dr. Linda Rice discusses African American lives during the War for Independence, specifically the role of Black Patriots who fought during the conflict. An estimated 5,000 African Americans - some free and some enslaved - fought against Great Britain. Another 20,000 fought on the side of the Loyalists. Dr. Rice taught high school English for 10 years in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania before completing her doctorate and coming to teach at Ohio University in 2002. While a high school teacher, Rice earned National Board Certification, a credential held by less than 3 percent of teachers nationwide. She is the author of more than 25 publications, including two books, 10 chapters for edited books, and numerous journal articles. She earned her PhD in English from Kent State University.

  Author Neil Phelps shares stories of the historic Licking County Jail. The Jail served Licking County for nearly a century, from 1889 to 1987. During that time, it housed many criminals including serial killers, thieves, and some of the most heinous murderers Licking County ever experienced. Suicides, jail escapes, sheriffs who died while serving in office, and a lynching are discussed. The history and construction of the jail will also be considered. Neil Phelps became interested in researching the history of the old Licking County jail in 2010 when he was a volunteer at the Licking County Records and Archives Department, helping clean and restore old jail registers form the 1800s. During this time, he became interested in writing his book about the history of the jail, including stories about many of the inmates who served time there. His research revealed many vicious crimes that were committed right here in Licking County, as well as jail escapes and suicides during the 98 years this jail was in operation. He also helped prepare the jail for public tours and served as a tour guide for several years.

This event is sponsored by The Ohio State Suicide Prevention Program and in partnership with student organizations across all six Ohio State campuses: Columbus, Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark and Wooster. Know someone that hasn't been REACH trained? Is it you? Challenge yourself, friends and colleagues to become advocates for suicide prevention by becoming a certified REACH Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper on this REACH on Repeat Challenge Day and help us beat last year's record (108 certificants) at Ohio State for the most students, staff and faculty trained in a single day! We are united across all our campuses and with the world in the shared responsibility of suicide prevention. Ohio State Newark is offering two 90-minute sessions: noon-1:30 p.m. 3:30-5 p.m. Learn to recognize warning signs of suicide. Practice employing empathy and connecting people with care. Unite with a coalition of Buckeyes dedicated to preventing suicide. Registration is required.

Pete Rose is a legend. He compiled more hits than anyone in the history of baseball, a record he set decades ago that still stands today. He was a working-class white guy from Cincinnati who made it; less talented than tough, and rough around the edges. He was everything that America wanted and needed him to be, the American dream personified, until he wasn’t. In the 1980s, Pete Rose came to be at the center of one of the biggest scandals in baseball history. He kept secrets, ran with bookies, took on massive gambling debts, and he was cast out for betting on baseball and lying about it. Charlie Hustle tells the full story of one of America’s most epic tragedies—the rise and fall of Pete Rose. Drawing on firsthand interviews with Rose himself and with his associates, as well as on investigators' reports, FBI and court records, archives, a mountain of press coverage, Keith O’Brien chronicles how Rose fell so far from being America’s “great white hope.” It is Pete Rose as we've never seen him before. It showcases anatomy and medicine through inaccurate dramatizations, or anatomical modifications are justified as "fantasy elements" and not explained using current anatomic knowledge. This talk will focus on incorporating student interests into a traditional science course and the research supporting the use of pop culture characters as case studies in science class.   John E. Hancock talks about his book, Traveler's Guide to Ancient Ohio: Featuring the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks . This compact, richly illustrated travel guide takes visitors to the many Indigenous earthwork wonders of southern Ohio, including the brilliant landscape monuments recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The author recounts the 30-year story of how this project came about—the vision for a curated, regional approach to Ohio’s brilliant American Indian earthworks—and describes how this book showcases southern Ohio’s rich and surprising layers of cultural heritage for both armchair and on-site travelers. A Q&A session and a book signing take place after the lecture. Copies of his book are available for purchase during the event. About the Author: John E. Hancock (M. Arch. McGill University) taught architectural history and design at the University of Cincinnati for four decades. His expertise in environmental meaning and experience has informed his leadership of both actual and virtual cultural heritage tours in Ohio and across Europe. Working with interdisciplinary teams and Native advisors since the 1990s, he has created many public education media projects about Ohio’s Indigenous earthworks, including The Ancient Ohio Trail website (2014). Most recently, John served as the principal author and photographer for the successful Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage nomination (2023), in collaboration with the Ohio History Connection and National Park Service. He has now re-edited and expanded that work for release from Smithsonian Books (2026).

  Dr. Michael Yonchak explores the life, work, and impact of one of modern music's greats: Frank Zappa. Michael S. Yonchak is a Professor of Music at Otterbein University, teaching a variety of ensembles and courses in general education and popular music history, as well as overseeing Otterbein’s new Commercial Music program. He completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Yonchak maintains an active schedule as a freelance percussionist in the Columbus area, currently appearing with the KB4 Jazz Organ Quartet, and perennial appearances with the Lost Revival (indie rock) and internationally recognized flamenco dancer/instructor Griset Damas-Roche of the Flamenco Company of Columbus. Recent endeavors include presentations for Otterbein University’s “Lifelong Leaning Community” (LLC) on the history of Rock and Roll and the Roots of Hip Hop, two co-authored article publications in the Percussive Arts Society's Percussive Notes : an analysis of Jennifer Higdon’s Grammy-winning Percussion Concerto (December 2023), followed by an historic overview of Frank Zappa ’s percussionists (April 2024), and a complete manifestation of Frank Zappa 's landmark jazz fusion album Hot Rats (1969), reorchestrated for wind ensemble with rock band and performed by the Otterbein Wind Ensemble in December of 2024.
