For many immigrants, their first sight of the U.S. is the Statue of Liberty. The iconic structure promises sanctuary, hope, and a fresh start, but they soon learn that America's arms are not always open. Colorized rare home movies and archival footage reveal the amazing stories of ordinary people who share the same dream. From Caribbean immigrants who settled in Harlem to Italian "radicals" shipped back home to celebrities such as Albert Einstein, see how America changed as immigrants brought new cultures from the margins to the mainstream. One Week. One Stage. One Unforgettable Summer. The Midland Theatre is proud to welcome back Missoula Children's Theatre and their legendary Red Truck Tour for a one-week summer residency โ€” and this year, they're bringing the magic of Aladdin to our historic stage. A magic lamp. A Cave of (not-so-great) Wonders. Wise Genies, a powerful Sultan, lost Penguins, talking Palm Trees, and one young hero trying to make a good impression on a Princess โ€” all without a single wish to spare. Adapted by Michael McGill with original music and lyrics, this is a swirling sandstorm of Arabian adventure packed with memorable characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and enough heart to fill 1,001 nights. And the best part? The entire cast is made up of local students โ€” right here from our community. How It Works Professional touring directors from Missoula Children's Theatre arrive at The Midland with everything needed for a full production โ€” costumes, sets, and a whole lot of theatrical energy. The only thing missing is the cast. That's where your child comes in. Students in grades 1โ€“12 audition on Monday and, in just five days, rehearse, develop their characters, learn their parts, and perform a fully staged production on The Midland's historic stage.

Presented in color, a look back on the lives, businesses, and friendships of three of Americaโ€™s titans of industry: Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and Thomas Edison. America is still a rural nation in 1910. Most homes don't have electricity, and less than one percent of the population owns a car. But that changes with the rise of Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and Thomas Edison, who help foster the economic and technological booms of the early 20th century. Through colorized archival footage and personal home movies, explore the business relationships that transformed America and glimpse into powerful friendships that lasted a lifetime. • ๐ŸŽต Christopher Cross

    19:00 · The Midland Theatre

    Music
    View original ↗

Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1980 self-titled debut album, winning five Grammy Awards, includingโ€”for the first time in Grammy historyโ€”the โ€œBig Fourโ€ most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single โ€œSailingโ€), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also โ€œSailingโ€), and Best New Artist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Cross has sold over 10 million albums. His music has garnered five Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination and five Top 10 singles. Within a year of the first albumโ€™s release, Cross joined music royalty Burt Bacharach to write โ€œArthurโ€™s Theme,โ€ for the movie Arthur, which won an Academy Award for Best Song. With his 1983 release, Another Page, Cross was again in the Top 10 with the singles โ€œAll Rightโ€ and โ€œThink of Laura.โ€ His song, โ€œSwept Away,โ€ composed for the hit television series, Growing Pains, was nominated for an Emmy. Cross started his own label and, since 2007, has released 8 albums of new material, including A Christopher Cross Christmas and The Cafรฉ Carlyle Sessions, jazz treatments of hits and favorites born out of a residency at the famous Hotel Carlyle in New York City. Take Me as I Am, released in 2018, features richly-crafted melodies and elegant guitar work. The latest project for Christopher Cross Records is aptly titled The Complete Works. Released in 2020, it celebrates his 40th anniversary as a recording artist and is a collection of all 12 previously-released CDs, one CD of singles and bonus tracks, and a pink vinyl containing one track from each album chosen by Christopher. Even though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the 40th Anniversary tour, he is once again performing the carefully-crafted songs and music his fans enjoy, starting with โ€œSailingโ€ and โ€œRide Like the Windโ€ from his Grammy-winning debut album and continuing through the decades of his ever-changing but always excellent material. All in all, itโ€™s been quite a ride, one that has taken Cross from his early days in Texas where he once served as a drum tech for Ginger Baker, bought gear from Jimmy Page, and played lead guitar for Deep Purple on a night when Ritchie Blackmore fell ill, to this place as a respected singer-songwriter-guitar player who continues to share his original music with the world.
