Newark, Ohio Neighborhoods and Nearby Towns
Newark does not have formally named neighborhoods the way a large city does. People describe where they live by landmark, school, or direction from downtown. This page is being written with local input; the outline below is what it will cover.
Areas of Newark
- Downtown and the courthouse square. The historic core: the Licking County Courthouse, the Midland Theatre, Canal Market District, restaurants and bars on and around the square. Older homes and some loft-style apartments within walking distance.
- North Newark. Generally north of OH-16. Mostly post-war and newer single-family homes, with the newer subdivisions on the northern edge.
- East End. Older residential streets east of downtown toward the Licking River.
- West side. Toward Granville and OSU Newark. The shared OSU Newark and COTC campus is here.
- South Newark and Heath. The city of Heath borders Newark to the south along Hebron Road (OH-79), which is the main retail corridor for the area.
Nearby communities people also consider
- Heath. Its own city and school district, immediately south. Shares most services and shopping with Newark.
- Granville. A village about seven miles west, home to Denison University. Historic, walkable downtown, highest home prices in the county, well-regarded schools.
- Hebron and Buckeye Lake. South along OH-79 toward I-70. Closer to the interstate, lakefront options at Buckeye Lake.
- Pataskala and Etna. West along the Columbus side of the county, closest to the New Albany and Reynoldsburg job centers.
