Setting Up Utilities in Newark, Ohio
Newark is served by a mix of city-run and regional utilities. Set up water and electric before move-in day; both can usually be started with a phone call or online form a few days ahead.
Water and sewer
Inside city limits, water and wastewater are provided by the City of Newark. New service, transfers, and billing go through the city's utility office. Start at newarkohio.gov. Addresses outside the city may be on a county water system, a village system, or a private well; the seller or landlord will know which.
Electric
AEP Ohio is the electric distribution utility for Newark and most of Licking County. Start service at aepohio.com. Ohio lets you choose a separate generation supplier; the state's Apples to Apples comparison site lists current offers. AEP delivers the power and sends the bill either way.
Natural gas
Columbia Gas of Ohio serves the Newark area. Start service at columbiagasohio.com. As with electric, you can pick a separate gas supplier through Apples to Apples. Some rural addresses use propane instead; check before assuming gas is available.
Trash and recycling
Residential trash collection inside Newark is handled through the city. Confirm the current hauler, pickup day, and recycling rules with the city when you set up water. Townships and villages contract separately.
Internet and TV
Availability varies block by block. Providers that serve parts of Newark include Spectrum (cable) and AT&T (DSL and fiber in some areas). Fiber build-outs in the county are ongoing, so check each provider's address lookup rather than relying on what the previous occupant had. The FCC's National Broadband Map shows every provider that reports service to an address.
Driver's license and plates
New Ohio residents have 30 days to get an Ohio license and register vehicles. Licking County has BMV deputy registrar and driver exam locations in Newark. Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of Ohio address. Details and a checklist are at bmv.ohio.gov.
Voting
Register or update your registration with the Licking County Board of Elections or online through the Ohio Secretary of State.
